ExpertGPS is GPS mapping software that can import and export topographic or aerial maps. However, it does not offer the ability to use street overlays that you can use with your GPS unit.
This GPS mapping software is aimed at those who are interested in hunting, biking, hiking or geocaching. In our research we also found it interesting that it has been used for aviation and farming purposes as well.
The calibration required to download the maps into ExpertGPS was challenging to use. It seems overly difficult for those who are looking for simple mapping software. We also found that this mapping program tends to freeze during start up. However, once we were up and running we didn't encounter any other issues.
ExpertGPS GPS mapping software includes a number of helpful topographic maps. You can also download new maps into the system, but these maps can only be viewed in 2D. ExpertGPS also provides links to websites where you can download new maps. We found it helpful that we were able to import our own maps and aerial photos. One of the great features of this mapping software is the ability to review the tracklog over an aerial photograph to see exactly where you are located from a bird's-eye view.
If you enjoy long mountain hikes you may find the ability to measure the grade a great advantage. Knowing just how far you have to travel up a hill could help you better plan your specified route for a more enjoyable hike. Another great tool that we found was the ability to measure elevation and the ability to measure distance. This ensures that your hike does not turn into a mountain climb.
We were disappointed to learn that ExpertGPS does not have an icon representation for POI. It also has limited search capability, and you have to download and plot POIs yourself.
ExpertGPS GPS mapping software has some of the basic features such as the ability to plot multiple routes that you would expect from mapping software. It was also a big help to be able to create multiple waypoints with ease.
If you are a Google Earth user you are in luck! ExpertGPS allows you the ability to import images from Google Earth.
We found it unfortunate that ExpertGPS mapping software offers only weather update information.
ExpertGPS was very simple to set up and we did not encounter any problems throughout the setup process.
We found the ExpertGPS help resources to be useful as the mapping software comes with a user manual and an email address to contact the manufacturer, TopoGrafix. They also offer a tutorial online, several online user forums and a list of FAQs.
ExpertGPS by TopoGrafix allows you to toggle between two maps, is compatible with several GPS units and has the ability to upload maps –though this task is difficult and requires some technical expertise to master. If you are technically inclined, this mapping software should not be difficult to use.
If you are interested in this mapping software but are unsure if you want to purchase it right away, they do offer a free 30-day trial, which is available on their website.
